‘On the riverside’ is a visual research aiming at investigating the different forms of relations between natural and man-made elements along the river Thames.
Following the changing landscape from inner to outer London, the series traces the shifting boundary between the rapid urban transformation of the metropolis and the persistence of rural landscapes and riverside activities. Beyond the city centre, East and West London — often perceived as distinct and contrasting urban identities — gradually dissolve into landscapes that become almost indistinguishable.
Described by British author and photographer Eric de Maré as a “long, winding, domesticated snake”, the Thames provides a point of observation from which to explore the transformation of the built environment. Both a natural threshold and a line of connection, the river links a succession of landscapes, settlements and ways of life along its course.
The series was exhibited at Stour Space, East London, from 28 to 30 June 2019, as part of the London Festival of Architecture. Following a positive public response, the exhibition was extended until 10 July 2019.
